Wastewater Treatment Facility
Treatment Facility
This summarizes key elements of the treatment process, equipment selection and facility layout. The treatment facility uses the extended aeration activated sludge process. Unit processes include:
Preliminary Treatment
Preliminary treatment includes screening, grit removal and Influent flow measurement. These three elements have been grouped together in a single enclosed space. Screenings and grit are discharged to wheeled carts that are emptied into a dumpster for removal to landfill disposal.
Secondary Treatment
Secondary treatment includes extended aeration activated sludge treatment followed by sedimentation and the associated systems for aeration, return (RAS) and waste (WAS) sludge pumping and scum pumping. Aeration basins, clarifiers and pumping systems are arranged to provide two separate process trains of equal capacity.
- Activated Sludge Treatment (extended aeration)
- Sedimentation
- Return Activated Sludge
- Waste Activated Sludge
- Scum Pumping
Post-Secondary Treatment
After sedimentation plant flow is aerated to raise the dissolved oxygen level and disinfected to destroy pathogens. Flow again is metered prior to discharge to Fountain Creek. These three elements are grouped together in a single enclosed space.
Sludge Handling
Sludge is treated to Class B pathogen reduction standards suitable for beneficial application to agricultural land and/or reclamation of disturbed land. If application sites are not available, sludge will be hauled to a landfill for disposal. To achieve Class B pathogen reduction and the vector attraction reduction requirements set forth in 40 CFR, Part 503, Subpart D, and the Colorado Biosolids Regulations, sludge is stabilized by aerobic digestion and dewatered using the Deskins "Quick Dry" System®. An area is provided to store dewatered sludge on site prior to disposal.
Operations Building
The Operations Building provides housing of the aeration blowers, electrical equipment, operations office space and control panels, laboratory facilities for process control and regulatory compliance monitoring, rest room and locker room facilities, and space for maintenance activities. Screening, grit removal, flow measurement and disinfection processes are also enclosed. The operations building is extended to house the final clarifiers.
Facilities have been sized and laid out to accommodate design conditions and facilitate future expansion.
Instrumentation And Controls
Control of plant equipment and process flows is primarily manual with limited use of automated controls and programmable logic controllers (PLCs). Major equipment is controlled from local panels mounted near the equipment with equipment function and alarms monitored at the main control panel (MCP). A telephone dialer system contacts key personnel in an equipment alarm during unmanned periods.
